Today marks my first entry in the Beautiful Beasties Pet Photography Network “52 Project” — where participants challenge themselves each week by interpreting an agreed-upon theme and expressing it through photography. It’s a great way to push oneself creatively and just have a little fun.<\/p>\n

That’s all great, you’re probably thinking, but what does any of that have to do with the praying mantis? Well, this week’s theme was “wild sightings” — an attempt to turn the camera away from our pets and on other animals that we see (or don’t see) around us, everyday. I had hoped to catch some geese grazing in the fields near my house — they’re very common visitors this time of year — but they didn’t seem interested in what the farmers had planted, so I had to settle for this praying mantis that randomly showed up on our screen door (and that I safely transported to our hedgerow). It was a wild enough sighting for me — I see them maybe once every 1-2 years!<\/p>\n
